UKYP CONVENTION JULY 2016
On Saturday 25th of July, Owen Griffiths, the MYP and I the DMYP for Bracknell Forest, attended a convention in London run by the United Kingdom Youth Parliament.
We started off the day with a welcome in the auditorium which included some information about the Youth Parliament and what it does; then we split off into groups for the rest of the day.
Each group got to take part in 2 workshops, giving each group the same opportunities. The workshop topics were:
Make Your Mark - the largest youth consultation in the UK,
Mental Health - the youth campaign for this year, voted for in the Make Your Mark ballot last year.
Make Your Mark was my first workshop and we looked at how to best inform teachers and other adults in charge on the merits of the consultation and the importance of getting a fair representative by allowing as many young people to participate. We brainstormed ideas on what we wanted to achieve and the resources and steps we would need to take in order to achieve our aims, together with handy hints on how to run a successful campaign.
The second session was about the mental health campaign. At this session I was able to showcase the amazing things Bracknell Forest Youth Council have already achieved around mental health as it is our local campaign. I told the group about the progress we had made in getting counsellors into schools and training our members to be mental health ambassadors. I was incredibly pleased when a lot of the group said that the work Bracknell Forest Youth Council had already achieved was a great inspiration to them and that they would be feeding back to their respective youth councils on what we had done so that maybe they could aim to do something similar.
All in all, it was an enjoyable and enlightening experience for us both and we look forward to the next one.
